Small yellow taxis: Gauteng clamps down on unlicenced e-hailing operators
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Gauteng Traffic Police have impounded 29 cars used as e-hailing taxis without the necessary operating license.
The cars were impounded between Friday and Tuesday.
Pictures of the tiny yellow cars have been making the rounds on social media, with some used on prominent e-hailing and food delivery service platforms.
Most cars operated in the Johannesburg CBD, Braamfontein, Westbury and Noordgesig areas.
Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane says most drivers abandoned their vehicles and disappeared after being stopped by law enforcement.
"In terms of the National Land Transport Act, no person shall undertake a public transport service without an operating license or permit. We appeal to the operators to ensure they have valid operating licenses as they conduct their work."
“We call upon the owners to refrain from using these vehicles as public transport without valid operating licenses. This kind of practice may also lead to taxi conflict which often result in loss of lives,” he added
