Pangarker appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court on Friday, accused of kidnapping and killing 8-year-old Tazne van Wyk.

Van Wyk went missing two weeks ago and was last seen walking to a tuckshop near her home in Elsies River.

Her body was recovered from a storm water pipe on the N1 outside Worcester in the Western Cape on Monday.

Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Western Cape Eric Ntabazalila says the suspect did not apply for bail and will therefore remain in police custody.

During his first court appearance, the suspect complained that he had been manhandled by police.

"He placed on record that he has injuries on his ribs, around his neck, on his left and right arms and left leg. He says he can't sit or stand and these injuries are a result of police action,” says Ntabazalila.

Pangarker is expected to appear in court again on April 17.

"The accused has not applied for bail at this stage. The state will oppose bail when he does," Ntabazalila adds.

The suspect is facing a long list of convictions dating back to 1981.

Hundreds of community members gathered outside the court earlier on Friday calling for Pangkaeker to rot in jail.

Angry residents from Ravensmead could be heard singing somberly, 'senzeni na? (What have we done?)'

Several moms in the crowd made a chilling plea to President Cyril Ramaphosa, demanding that he join the community in fighting against the brutal murder of women and children.

"Cyril Ramaphosa hear me today, you better come out to our communities and fight with us for our communities," one mom can be heard saying.
