Teacher unions rail against Covid-19 decision

The National Professional Teachers Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) is seeking an urgent meeting with Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga.
This followed an announcement on Thursday that matric pupils who test positive for Covid-19 may still write their exams .
They will write exams at a separate venue following an agreement between the Departments of Health and Basic Education.
Naptosa president Basil Manuel says they view the decision as unlawful and unreasonable and that members who refuse to comply would have the union’s backing.
Manuel warns that Naptosa members who choose to make contact with pupils who test positive for Covid-19 will do so at their own risk.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) also believes it is “wrong” of the Department of Basic Education to allow learners infected with Covid-19 to write their exams on school property.
Sadtu says it had no say in the decision, which it believes violate safety protocols, and has also requested a meeting with the Departments of Health and Basic Education.
More than 1 million learners are currently sitting for the 2020 National Senior Certificate Exams which conclude on 15 December.
