Colonel Priscilla Naidu says they were alerted to the incident shortly before 4 pm on Tuesday.

She says18-year-old Kyran Ditlow and two friends were swimming in the dam while at the same time looking for golf balls when the youngster got into difficulty and drowned.

Colonel Naidu says Ditlow's next of kin have been notified and an inquest docket opened.

PE Golf Club Manager Gavin Chowles says their greenkeeper and a colleague were asked to assist the teenager.

After trying to resuscitate the boy with the help of the police and ambulance services he was sadly declared deceased.

Chowles acknowledged that people have been fishing for golf balls in the dam for years and that entrance to PE Golf Club has always been at their own risk.

He also passed on the club's condolences to the boy's friends and family.
