Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said Netcare 911 paramedics, provincial paramedics, fire services, and SA Police Service search and rescue were called to the scene at about midnight, on the N2 near the Bazley off-ramp on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast.

Reports indicated that a father and his six children were travelling along the N2 when the vehicle veered off the road and plunged down an embankment, he said.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene and found that the twisted frame of the vehicle had come to rest on its roof at the bottom of the embankment. Paramedics and firemen had to clamber down the steep slope with all their equipment as the patients were still trapped in the wreckage.”

After triaging, medics found that a 15-year-old girl had died due to the extensive injuries she sustained. The father and the other children, aged between nine and 11, sustained serious injuries.

“Firemen worked tirelessly to extricate the injured and had to set up a tactical rescue system to bring the injured back up to the road where the ambulances were parked.

“Paramedics stabilised the injured at the scene and then transported them to a hospital in Port Shepstone for the care that they required,” Botha said.
