Temporary social grant increase on the cards
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Finance Minister Tito Mboweni has confirmed that Treasury is looking at a temporary increase in the child-support grant and old-age pension grant.
Mboweni set out government’s plans to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus pandemic during a teleconference on Tuesday.
"We can confirm that we are looking at adjusting on a temporary basis, the child-support and also the old-age pension grant,” Mboweni said.
"The old-age pension grant becomes even more important because many people will tend to gravitate towards the old people who they know always receive a monthly pension.
"Therefore, one has to think strategically whether we increase the child support grant or the old age grant.”
A decision on the possible adjustment is expected to be made by Wednesday.
