Ten suspects nabbed across four provinces in one morning
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
The Hawks have arrested ten suspects aged between 34 and 60 during simultaneous operations across four provinces early on Thursday morning.
The case relates to tender fraud of R600 million and follows after a complaint by National Treasury.
It's alleged that the suspects colluded in accessing the Amathole District Municipality funds through flaunting of procurement processes where they were awarded a contract for ventilated improved toilets in the Eastern Cape.
Hawks spokesperson, Katlego Mogale, says the simultaneous raids took place in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.
"The Hawks’ preliminary investigation discovered that over R600 million was to be awarded for the contract, of which R286 million has already be paid to the suspects."
All ten suspects are expected to appear in the East London Magistrates Court on Friday on charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering.
The Asset Forfeiture Unit processes are also underway.
