Thabo Bester saga: Nineth accused remanded in custody
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The ninth suspect in the Thabo Bester escape saga made his first appearance in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Zanda Moyo is accused of aiding notorious Facebook rapist and convicted murderer Thabo Bester in his escape from Mangaung Correctional Centre in May last year.
Bester escaped from the maximum-security prison in May last year by faking his own death.
He was re-arrested in Tanzania in April alongside his alleged accomplice Dr Nandipha Magudumana.
Moyo’s charges also include fraud, violation of a body, and harbouring an escaped convict.
Magudumana is accused of fraudulently claiming the body of Katlego Bareng, whose body was thought to be Bester’s when it was discovered in the burnt-out cell, was actually that of Zanda Moyo's brother.
She claimed to be helping Moyo to have the corpse buried.
Magistrate Moholo Khabisi granted the state prosecutor’s request to have the matter postponed for Moyo to get a legal representative.
“You are afforded an opportunity to consult family members to consider the issue of legal representation.
“The case is hereby remanded until the 20th of June in court number 20A for bail information in terms of section 50 subsection 6 of the criminal procedure act. For your decision regarding legal representation, you will remain in custody until then.”
Thabo Bester and Dr. Nandipha Magudumana are also due to appear in court as well on the 20th June.
