Thieves dig underground tunnel to rob liquor store
Shoprite Holdings is offering an R50 000 reward for information on a robbery of alcohol worth R300 000 at one of its liquor stores in Newtown.
The group has described the incident as “bizarre.”
In a statement, the company’s Oswald Meiring says the thieves tunneled through a solid concrete floor.
"The suspects avoided the mall’s main entrance and instead used electrical and stormwater tunnels beneath the shopping center to gain access to an area beneath the store.

"They then tunneled through the solid concrete floor directly into the liquor shop to gain access to undetected."
Meiring says it is unclear how they knew where to tunnel or how long it took them to get through the concrete floor.
The suspects fled with a variety of products, including whiskey, brandy, gin, and beer.
