Thousands nabbed as police intensifies special operations

More than 2000 people have been arrested in Limpopo and Gauteng during intensified operations.

Holding cells are reaching full capacity after Limpopo police nabbed 1 098 people and Gauteng police 1 100 for a range of crimes.


Police embarked on a number of intelligence driven operations that only concluded on Monday morning.


According to Gauteng provincial police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo, operations were conducted at roadbloacks, shebeens, stop and searches and patrols.


"Johannesburg police arrested more than 321 suspects for offences that include possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, fraud, theft and assault and murder," says Masondo.


Masondo says a 19-year-old Krugersdorp man who allegedly severely assaulted his 40-year-old biological father who later succumbed to injuries, was also arrested.


In the capital city, police nabbed more than 407 people for offences ranging from assault, theft, malicious damage to property, possession of suspected stolen property and robberies.


According to Limpopo police spokesperson, Moatshe Ngoepe, Operation Fiela has led to 1098 arrests.


"The operations were conducted in various ways including road blocks, stop and searches, patrols, tracing of wanted suspects, raiding of illegal businesses and inspections of firearm dealers."
