“The suspects were arrested on Wednesday after around the clock investigation following a series of public violence incidents wherein properties were damaged and burnt between 5 August and 18 August 2015 in Dikhibidung informal settlement near Sunrise Park in Rustenburg,” said police spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone.
“The violence erupted after the meeting that the community attended with the local municipality representatives failed to reach consensus on, 5 August 2015. It is alleged that the community demanded during that meeting to be employed at the local sewerage plant.”
He said two municipal trucks, a park home and an ambulance were torched and a municipal car was pelted with stones during the unrest.
He said another man, Tshegofatso Mangole (32), arrested on Sunday for malicious damage to property, appeared in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
“He was remanded in custody until Monday, 24 August 2015. Police are monitoring the situation to ensure stability,” he said.
