Three Germiston security guards nabbed for unlicensed firearms

Police in Gauteng have recovered more than 40 firearms over the past seven days.

The weapons, which included automatic rifles and pistols, as well as more than 480 rounds of ammunition, were seized in several areas across the province.


In Germiston, three security guards were apprehended after they were found with six illegal firearms.


"Members from Germiston police station were patrolling on Friday when they spotted a minibus full of security guards," says Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo.


"They stopped the combi and suddenly the security guards jumped out and fled on foot.


"Three of them were apprehended, and upon searching the combi police found six unlicensed firearms with ammunition."


Several suspects were also arrested in Tshwane.


"In Silverton, police officers received information about a vehicle that was used in a business robbery at a Spar in Tsamaya road in Mamelodi," says Masondo


"Police pounced on the suspects at their hideout on Friday and two suspects were apprehended, while three escaped and evaded arrest.

 

"Inside the house police found an AK-47 rifle with ammunition, while two vehicles suspected to be stolen and being used in the robbery were seized.


"Police also arrested four suspects in Olievenhoutbosh after they received information about suspects planning to commit armed robberies.


"The suspects were found with two unlicensed firearms when they were apprehended."
