Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says the police were notified of a robbery and begun searching for the suspects.

“A silver Hyundai i10 with four occupants that matched the description of the suspects' getaway car was spotted and police stopped it. Suspects sped off and a high-speed chase ensued that was followed by a shootout after suspects started firing shots at the police.

“The suspects crashed into other vehicles and three of them were arrested while the fourth suspect escaped on foot,” says Masondo.

Masondo says the police also recovered an unlicensed firearm and suspected stolen property.

One of the arrested suspects was injured and taken to hospital under police guard.

“The suspects were charged with armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearm attempted murder as well as reckless and negligent driving. They will be profiled to determine if they are not linked to other crimes, especially the robbery of courier vehicles,” he adds.

The police are still searching for the escaped suspect.
