Three men suspected of being criminals were beaten to death in Tonga, Mpumalanga, police said on Wednesday.
Police were informed that a group of people forcefully took a man from his house in Block B on Tuesday, but officers could not find them after a manhunt, police spokesperson Leonard Hlathi said.
A resident phoned the police just before midnight on Tuesday and reported that three men were being assaulted in the area.
When they arrived, they found the men's beaten bodies, but no perpetrators, he said.
The reason for the killings is that the victims are alleged to have committed crimes ranging from robbery to rape."
Provincial police commissioner Mark Magadlela condemned the murders.
Every human being has the right to life and should not, therefore, be unjustly killed by another human being irrespective of what he or she might have done, Magadlela said.
He said residents should involve the police instead of taking the law into their hands.
No arrests had been made.
