Three trucks torched, others damaged on N2 in Mpumalanga

Three trucks were torched and two others damaged in a labour-related protest in Ermelo.

A bakkie was also set alight during to the protest, which is said to be related to the building of a new mall in the area.
The vehicles were damaged on Wednesday night on the N2 between Ermelo and Piet Retief in Mpumalanga.
“The unfortunate part is that they happened to be an easy target because the community of Ermelo are fighting among themselves over a project of building a mall in Ermelo," says Mpumalanga Community Safety MEC Vusi Shongwe.

“So there’s a contest between wards and groups who think they are eligible to be employed in that particular space. They were even fighting among themselves there and we have learned that they have injured some of the security and police in that space because they were trying to quell the situation.”
No arrests have been made.
