Nxumalo represents Mthokoziseni Maphisa, who is one of the five men accused of being involved in Meyiwa’s murder.

During his testimony on Thursday, Thwala told the court that there was no time to tell Meyiwa to come with him, as shots had already been fired.

Earlier this week, Thwala told the High Court that he quickly exited the Khumalo household in Vosloorus, as soon as the first shot went off in October 2014.

This was the shot that is believed to have killed Meyiwa.

“Shots are fired at the Khumalo residence but you decide to run away leaving your best friend in the house, what prompted you to go back,” questioned Nxumalo.

“Yes you are right, the firearm went off and went back to the house outside and I jumped to the neighbours. What made me go back was because the neighbours were there and of assistance.”

“Further when you met the deceased going the opposite direction, you did not tell him to let us take this direction and run away. You run alone leaving your friend behind,” Nxumalo probed.

“As I have already said, that is a firearm that went off. There was no time for me to say Senzo turn around let’s go that way,” responded Thwala.
