Leaners across South Africa were up early on Wednesday morning for the first school day of the 2018 academic year.
The Basic Education Department has urged teachers and learners to "get down to business" to get the year off to a good start.
"Your passing or failing at the end of the year will be determined by what happens today," says the departmental spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga.
No serious incidents were reported early Wednesday morning, apart from a parent being arrested while clashing with protesters outside Hoërskool Overvaal in Vereeniging.
Furthermore, a number of Gauteng learners do not yet know where they will be studying in 2018.
This after the provincial education department admitted on Tuesday roughly 28 000 grade 1-and 8 learners still need to be placed.
