Tourism boost as SanParks reopens for self-drive day excursions
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that self-drive day excursions will resume from Monday, after being closed for two months.
The excursions will only be permitted in parks that cater for self-drives.
This means Namaqua National Park, Boulders and Cape Point in Table Mountain National Park will remain closed.
SANParks CEO Fundisile Mketeni says the opening of the parks will be done under the strictest health protocols.
“As a result, we are limiting face-to-face contact between staff and guests by encouraging online and telephonic day visit bookings and full payment of conservation fees prior to arrival where possible.”
Mtekeni says SANParks will also observe the regulations which prohibit inter-provincial travel.

“Guests therefore must exit into the province from which they entered the park.”
Park visitors have been urged to follow regulations when inside the parks including wearing masks, keeping social distance, and following transport capacity directives.
Hides and picnic spots at all parks remain closed.
Braaing at picnic sites will also not be allowed during this period.
