It's never too early to start on shopping for the holidays, and US toy giant Toys R US is helping out with the publication of its hot toys list.

But if you're looking for something soft, cuddly and simple, you  might find the going rough.

As might be expected in the increasingly digital age, almost all the toys recommended by the world's biggest toy chain use the latest technology to entice  and entertain the tech-savvy younger generation.

The company's top 15 choices include the Xbox One, which goes on sale in the US on November 22 for 500 dollars.

For kids of all ages who fell in love with the characters of hit movie Despicable Me 2, there are three talking characters able to recite 30 lines from the movie and respond to sound for back-and-forth conversation.

Another interactive doll is perennial favourite Big Hugs Elmo, which literally embraces kids as well as sings them songs.

Kids who want a bit more excitement might be able to talk their parents into splashing out 400 dollars on a Crazy Cart, an electric  mini go-kart that had special controls to allow drivers to spin, drift and drive like pros.

Future physicians may like to treat their family and friends at Disney's Doc McStuffins Get Better Check-Up Center, while parents who want to reclaim their iPad may consider getting their offspring the 150-dollar LeapPad Ultra - a kid-centric tablet that comes with 800 apps and games.

Perhaps the flying, spinning Flutterbye Flying Fairy will be the toy to enchant that special child in your life, or maybe they will prefer the Ever After High Royal and Rebel dolls, or the Skylanders SWAP Force, a pack of action figures that can be combined to make more than 250 unique characters.

Leave it to Lego to create perhaps the only gift on the list that may have been possible 10 or 20 years ago. With the 1,258-brick Legends of Chima Lion Chi Temple, kids can create different tribes to restore peace or battle each other with seven action figures and their weapons.
