"The elections which were spearheaded by Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa, afforded traditional communities the right to democratically elect their own representatives into their traditional councils," spokeswoman Dineo Lolokwane said.

The first traditional council elections were held in January and March.

Residents of Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati, Ngaka Modiri Molema, and Bojanala Platinum District took part in the elections.

"Registered community members voted for the 40 percent of the traditional council. The other 60 percent will be appointed by Dikgosi [chief of the
village] and it will consist mostly of members of the royal family," she said.

North West House of Traditional Leaders chairman Kgosi Madoda Zibi said the elections were an important part of the democratic process that was long overdue in all traditional communities.

"This will also bring about good governance and stability in all traditional communities," he said.

The next traditional council elections were expected to be held in the next five years.
