Traffic disruptions expected as residents protest crime and corruption

They're  marching against crime, corruption and the lack of service delivery in the area.

 

According to the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) the R55 will be closed from 8am to around midday to allow members of the community to take part in the march.

 

 In a statement it says that the march will start at the Waterberg open ground next to the R55 road towards Extension 24 where residents will hand over a memorandum to the ANC's Gauteng Provincial Chairperson, Paul Mashatile.

"Metro Police officers will be deployed to monitor the march and all affected streets and motorists are advised to avoid the affected streets and use alternative routes," TMPD says in a statement.

 

Organisers of the march have indicated that it will be a peaceful demonstration by concerned residents of Olievenhoutbosch and that "hooligans will be dealt with accordingly."


"There will be a high police presence to monitor the situation," TMPD says.

The chairperson of the ANC Youth League in Ward 106, Kenneth Masha, says they will not allow any form of public transportation like taxis until the memorandum has been handed over to Mashatile.

 

The community is marching against the huge spate of criminal activities that have taken place in the area in the recent weeks and months as well as the corruption taking place in Wards 106 and 77." Masha says in a statement.

 

He adds that they will also demand the immediate suspension of the two ward councillors of Wards 106 and 77.
