Traffic disruptions in Tshwane as Santaco highlights student safety
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
Motorists in Tshwane can expect some delays in the CBD as the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) takes to the streets to awareness of student safety during registration at tertiary institutions in the capital city.
Scores of prospective students are expected to make their way into Tshwane during the next few weeks as the academic calendar gets underway.
But Santaco regional branch fears there will be a spike in mugging as criminals target unsuspecting students.
Santaco Tshwane spokesperson, McDonald Makata says the industry’s actions follow years of public outcry over crime in the CBD.
“We are facing the outcry of the people mugged and do not have money to pay for their trips,” says Makata.
“We, therefore, set up an awareness campaign to inform the public about the criminals that are targeting the unsuspecting citizens.”
The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) says the motorcade will gather from 08:00 at Old Putco Depot and move to Asian Bazaar Taxi Rank.
“Tshwane Metro Police officers will be deployed to monitor the motorcade and all affected Streets,” says TMPD spokesperson Isaac Mahamba.
The following intersections will be affected:
*Cowie Street
*Kgosi Mampuru Street
*Sophie De Bryn Street
*Thabo Sehume Street
*Nana Sita Street
*Visagie Street
*Pretorius Street
*Madiba Street
Motorists are advised to avoid the affected Streets and use alternative routes such as:
*Park Street
*WF Nkomo Street
*Hamilton Street
*Eskia Mphahlele Drive
*Boom Street
The motorcade is expected to disperse from Asian Bazaar Taxi Rank at 10:30.
