Police and traffic officials are on high alert with the hopes of reducing the number of fatalities on the country’s roads over this period.

The N3 Toll Concession's Con Roux says they expect traffic volumes from Johannesburg to Durban to pick up on Saturday.

"Traffic volumes have actually been lower than we expected. That probably means that tomorrow morning, Saturday morning, is giong to be extremely busy and we're expecting traffic to pick up from as early as 4 o'clock," says Roux.

"We are expecting traffic to pick up considerably around Christmas."

Roux urged motorists to plan for their trips well ahead of time.
