Traffic volumes continue to increase: RTMC
Updated | By Thabo Tshabalala
Traffic volumes are expected to increase on national roads on Sunday as holidaymakers make their way back home to return to work and school.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says it had noted a high number of vechicles on the road since the begining of the weekend.
RTMC spokesperson Simone Zwane says around 1 500 vechicles have been coming into Gauteng on Saturday.
"Yesterday we saw vehicle numbers peaking at around 1 500 an hour entering Gauteng at 17:00," says Zwane.
"This morning there are already 1 100 vehicles an hour leaving different coastal areas in the direction of Gauteng and coming down from the north".
RTMC will also be montoring the border gates as many people are expected to return to South Africa from neighbouring countries.
One of the traffic authourty's main concerns this festive season was broken down cars on the side of the road.
Zwane says motorist should make sure their vechicles are roadworthy before hitting the road.
"These breakdowns on the side of the road pose a threat to other motorist," adds Zwane.
