The Verulam-born legendary playwright and musician died in a head-on collision while returning from a funeral in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape.
The Ngema family confirmed the passing in a short statement on Wednesday night.
"It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved brother, father, husband, and patriot, Mbongeni Ngema. The Ngema family, colleagues, and friends are deeply devastated about Ngema’s passing," the statement read.
Ngema was a renowned playwright, actor, choreographer, composer, and singer.
At the time of his passing, Ngema was best known for his award-winning works, which include Sarafina and Woza Albert.
Minister of Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa has expressed sadness at the passing of Mbongeni Ngema.
"With the passing of Dr Mbongeni Ngema, South Africa has lost one of its great playwrights, composers, lyricists, directors, and musicians. Dr Ngema’s work was celebrated in South Africa and internationally.
"At a critical time in the liberation struggle against apartheid, Dr Ngema took the plays Woza Albert, Asinamali and Sarafina to international stages. These productions not only showcased South African talent, but also narrated to the world the experiences of South Africans who were ostracised and brutalised under apartheid."
Followers of Ngema's work have taken to social media to express condolences to the Ngema Family.
