Tripartite alliance to picket at ConCourt against 'disappointing' Walus parole

The tripartite alliance - comprising of the African National Congress (ANC), the South African Communist Party (SACP), and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), is set to picket at the Constitutional Court in Braamfontein on Saturday against the release of Janusz Walus on parole.

This comes after the Constitutional Court ruled earlier this week that the Polish immigrant who shot dead then-SACP leader Chris Hani in 1993 be released on parole.

Walus, aged 69, has served nearly three decades of a life sentence for the murder, which took South Africa to the brink of a race war as negotiations to end apartheid entered their final phase.

His imminent release was met with criticisms from South Africans and various political parties.

The ANC-led alliance says the ConCourt picket will kick-start its program of action against his release.

SACP national spokesperson, Alex Mashilo says their joint programme of action will pursue constitutionally enshrined rights.

"This includes the right to freedom of expression, including protest action within the framework of our democratic dispensation on any matter or decision made by any authority, arm of the state, or third person in our republic,” he says.

According to Mashilo, the programme will culminate in a national day of action.

"We are exercising the democratic right that we fought for, which Walus assassinated Chris Hani, depriving him of his outmost right to life - Walus has never experienced that in his entire life up to today," he says.
