Tropic Storm to bring heavy rain to the Lowveld and parts of KZN

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has warned of severe rainfall in some parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and the northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal from Sunday as Tropical Cyclone ‘Eloise’ moves over Mozambique.

The cyclone is expected to make landfall in Mozambique on Saturday.
Meteorologist at the SAWS, Mbavhi Maliage, says there is a possibility of widespread flooding and damage to infrastructure over parts of Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
“At this current moment, while we are tracking the severe tropical storm Eloise, it is still currently in the channel, it is expected to become a tropical cyclone and it is expected to make landfall on the 23 in Mozambique. As it moves over, it will weaken and become an overland depression, but it will still bring a lot of rainfall especially over the eastern parts starting in the early hours of Sunday,” says Maliage.
She adds the Weather Service is currently closely monitoring the development of the cyclone and finalising its impact.
“Areas in South Africa that are expected to be affected are Limpopo and Mpumalanga. Some rain is also expected over the northern part of KwaZuluNatal,” adds Maliage.
She warned that the main concern is about flooding and communities being displaces, along with damage to roads and bridges.
“There are also some strong winds that we are expecting but they are expected to decrease throughout the day,”
