Heavy goods vehicles have for some time been in the spotlight following a series of fatal car accidents, especially on KZN's economic routes.

TASA's Mary Phadi says drivers are often put in a position where they have to drive very long distances alone while also trying to make a quick turnaround.

Phadi says this sometimes leads to disaster as fatigue always creeps in.

She says with two drivers being the norm, this can reduce the extra hours behind the wheel for each driver.

"You cannot have a person driving a truck for 24 hours. It is an abuse of employment labour laws. It is not fair. It is not correct to prioritise profit than the lives of the people driving trucks."
