Provincial police spokesperson Leonard Hlathi says the trucks were apparently transporting coal to Eskom.

"We are investigating cases of malicious damage to property. We are currently seeing six trucks which are burning and also a bakkie belonging to Eskom. We've just received reports there are three trucks that are burning on the other side, so when confirmed it will bring total to nine. But currently, I can only speak of a total of 6."

Hlathi says people started barricading roads in the early hours of Thursday morning.

"We got reports from three this morning that people starting barricading the roads that goes from Hendrina to Arnot (power station) with burning tires and any other objects. When we were still battling with that, we get reports of burning trucks."
