Trucks torched in Mpumalanga

At least six trucks were set alight at Hendrina in Mpumalanga on Thursday morning.

Provincial police spokesperson Leonard Hlathi says the trucks were apparently transporting coal to Eskom.

"We are investigating cases of malicious damage to property. We are currently seeing six trucks which are burning and also a bakkie belonging to Eskom. We've just received reports there are three trucks that are burning on the other side, so when confirmed it will bring total to nine. But currently, I can only speak of a total of 6."

Hlathi says people started barricading roads in the early hours of Thursday morning.

"We got reports from three this morning that people starting barricading the roads that goes from Hendrina to Arnot (power station) with burning tires and any other objects. When we were still battling with that, we get reports of burning trucks."

Transport Minister Blade Nzimande has called for the arrest of truck drivers blocking roads in Hendrina.

He described it as economic sabotage and urged law enforcement to “act mercilessly”.

"They are disrupting people who travelling for the Easter weekend. It's millions of people travelling at this time."

Nzimande was speaking at the Easter road safety campaign the N1 northbound in Pretoria on Thursday.
