Tsakane grandfather in the dock for beating wife to death, assaulting child
Updated | By Algoa FM
A six-year-old boy from Tsakane on the East Rand has been left traumatised after witnessing his grandfather allegedly beating his grandmother to death.
The child managed to capture the incident on a cell phone before being locked up in a cupboard.
A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in Gauteng Lumka Mahanjana says the 52-year-old man apparently arrived home drunk in the middle of the night in January.
An argument broke out between the couple and the man allegedly beat his wife to death in a fit of rage.
Mahanjana says when the man realised that his grandson was filming the assault on a cell phone, he grabbed the phone, and assaulted the child with a shovel, before locking him inside the cupboard.
The boy’s mother became suspicious when she could not open the door on her arrival home from work.
She then broke into the house where she discovered her injured child in the cupboard as well as the body of her mother.
The man was arrested in Vukuzenzele two days later.
He is expected back in court on 19 April.
