Tshwane and AfriForum reach agreement over electricity tariffs
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
The City of Tshwane and lobby group AfriForum have pledged to work together in proposing suitable electricity tariffs for Tshwane residents.
The two parties have agreed to wait for the National Energy Regulator of South Africa's (Nersa) approval of the 2019/20 tariff increase to be implemented.
AfriForum's Morne Mostert says they are happy that they will be able to sit down with the city and try and find a solution.
"We are happy to say that these meetings with the city were positive. It is very important for us as stakeholders to be responsible when accompanying these type of projects."
The city is expected to commence its electricity billing according to the 2018/19 tariffs on Wednesday.
City's spokesperson Omogolo Taunyane says as part of the agreement both parties have decided to conduct quarterly meetings to allow for a clear line of communication.
Tshwane Mayor Stevens Mokgalapa says residents who have been charged under the proposed tariffs from the beginning of the month will be reimbursed.
