Large parts of the metro were plunged into darkness following a massive outage on Sunday night.

The outage was caused by 132KV powerlines which fell on the N4, and leading to a power outage affecting large parts of Pretoria East and North.

The city says at least seven powerline structures collapsed.

The incident led to the closure of the N4 freeway east between Solomon Mahlangu and Simon Vermooten off-ramps.

City spokesperson Selby Bokaba says the city is prioritising the Pumulani Substation which feeds Mamelodi and surrounding areas.

“If needs be, we may be forced to implement rotational loading in the areas that are still outstanding. Consumers are advised that some areas that have been restored may experience a possible trip.

“The estimated time for restoration for the outstanding areas is not available yet. The city will keep its consumers updated on the developments and apologises for the inconvenience caused.”

Bokaba adds that Eskom will assist in dismantling and removing the damaged pylons and powerlines.

“The city’s team, together with Eskom and service providers, will begin in earnest the geo-technical studies of testing the soil, digging and clearing the servitude.

“The design aspects are also being finalised before Eskom brings the new pylons to the site. Tshwane has also submitted the wayleave application to Sanral and Gautrans to enable the technicians to work on the N4 and Solomon Mahlangu Drive, respectively.”

The affected areas include Queenswood, Baviaanspoort Prison, Garsfontein, Mamelodi, Pumulani, Sable Hills, Silverton and Honningneskrans to name a few.
