Brink made the commitment in the city council on Wednesday, where Finance MMC Peter Sutton was set to deliver the City's budget.

"Let me express my sincere apologies on the behalf of the DA. To the families who have been affected by this horrible incident, our first priority as a city must be to determine the source of the cholera outbreak that will enable us to contain the situation," said Brink.

"The city is committed to giving assistance, whatever assistance we can to the families of the victims as well as giving support to the Gauteng Health authorities who are managing the situation from Jubilee Hospital but also from other sites."

The cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal, north of Tshwane, has thus far claimed the lives of 17 people while 67 others have been hospitalised.

The City of Tshwane has now allocated R450 million for the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The amount will be allocated over a period of three years.

"It is for this reason that we are allocating the biggest budgetary allocation possible towards the refurbishment of Rooiwal," Brink told reporters.

"An amount of R450 million will be allocated over the next three years, split into R150 million annual allocations.

"In this next financial year, the first R150 million allocation will be prioritised towards finalising the Phase 1 upgrades of the project. We will now be relentless in ensuring that we address the long-standing issues at Rooiwal."
