The Gauteng provincial government has moved to place the City of Tshwane under administration.
The announcement was made by MEC for Human Settlements and Cooperative Governance Lebogang Maile, who briefed media on Friday morning amid the mayoral chaos in Johannesburg and Tshwane.
“Based on the material facts as represented above, the Gauteng Provincial Exco has been left with no choice but to invoke the provisions of section 139(1), read together with sections 154 of the Constitution, by taking appropriate steps to support and strengthen the capacity of the City of Tshwane to,” said Maile.
Tshwane is without a mayor and a speaker after both were voted out by council on Thursday, amid concerns over the city’s financial health and a lack of service delivery.
Acting city manager Moeketsi Ntsimane will now be in control of the city until council sits again to elect a successor to Stevens Mokgalapa.
