The latest dismissals bring the total number of axed city workers to 100 after 93 were fired during the past two weeks.

Workers embarked on a strike at the end of July in protest over non-payment of salary increases.

They are demanding 3.5% and 5.4% salary increases.

The city was subsequently granted a court interdict prohibiting the striking employees from intimidating co-workers and damaging any property.

The city’s spokesperson Selby Bokaba said six employees have been fingered as the ‘ring leaders’ behind the protest.

"The six are shop stewards based at the city’s Middestad Building, situated in the CBD, while the seventh is based in Region 4 and was dismissed for intimidation.

"The shop stewards, after receiving letters of intention for their dismissal, embarked on a pushback by trashing the corridors of the Middestad Building with litter. More letters of intention to dismiss are being processed."

The city’s urgent application to the Labour Court for contempt was dismissed on Tuesday on the grounds of urgency.

"The ruling has no bearing on the interim interdict granted to the city on 28 July,” Bokaba added.
