Tshwane ‘invests’ R1.3m in 15 unemployed youths

The City of Tshwane says it has trained 15 unemployed youths on inspection of fire hydrants as part of its firefighting efforts.
A local insurance company committed R1.3 million towards the training, stipends and travel allowance.
Tshwane Mayor Randall Williams says the city sees it as an investment in its young people.
“This diverse group of young people expressed excitement over this project, particularly with the skills and experience they are gaining.
“It is important that we always incorporate youth in the work that we do, particularly during this month where we celebrate Youth Day on June 16.”
Williams says the fire hydrant initiative is driven by concerns of fire risk in urban centres.
“Recently, we have seen scores of devastating fires destroying public facilities, such as Parliament, Charlotte Maxeke Hospital and the University of Cape Town.”
