Tshwane reservoirs show some recovery overnight, says city

Tshwane’s MMC for Utilities and Regional Operations Daryl Johnston says the Koedoesnek HL Reservoir and Soshanguve Reservoir have recovered overnight, while the ones in Rayton remain low.

Level 2 water restrictions have been implemented in Gauteng amid an increase in water consumption over the past two weeks, which Rand Water said has resulted in a decline in overall reservoir storage capacity from 52% to 38%.

The utility’s restricted flow has put pressure on the water network's ability to service all households.

Tshwane's MMC for Utilities Daryl Johnston says the recovering of reservoirs has allowed restoring of services to areas.

"Overnight we saw both the Koedoesnek HL Reservoir as well as the Soshanguve North and South reservoirs recovering well, which has allowed restoring service to the areas.

"We are grateful for the slightly cooler weather which has assisted with reducing water usage but we need to continue to be careful with water."

Johnston adds that the restrictions in the province are due residents using too much water.

"The restrictions in Gauteng are largely due to overuse of water and until the level of usage drops sufficiently, we will continue to need restrictions. This morning’s levels were: Koedoesnek HL - 72%, Soshanguve North –  75% , Soshanguve South – 55%.

"However, we have seen the Rayton North and South Reservoirs are running low around 15%. We are watching them closely and would encourage residents in Rayton and the surrounds to be extra careful with their water usage.

"While we have so far managed to work together with Rand Water to avoid any extended major outages in the City of Tshwane, I must please emphasise the need or residents to continue to take this seriously.

"Johannesburg Water’s Commando system has crashed and their Hursthill reservoirs zone is going to experience no water until it can recover.  We are working continuously to try avoid similar situations in Tshwane and by conserving water we help the entire Rand Water system and our neighbours.”
