Tshwane 'slowly' restoring water at Mooikloof, Grootfontein reservoirs

The City of Tshwane says water is steadily being restored at the Mooikloof and Grootfontein reservoirs following this week's water supply interruptions.

Durban residents are fuming about a water outage that affected large parts of the city related to an eThekwini municipality labour dispute that has disrupted services.

The outages left thousands of residents without water.

Utility Services MMC Themba Fosi says both reservoirs were still struggling to build capacity on Thursday morning, as water was flowing out as fast as it flowed in.

"In discussions with Rand Water, we worked on a plan to not only throttle the City of Tshwane’s Garsfontein reservoir and isolate Rand Water’s Bronberg reservoir, but to also isolate Rand Water’s Vlakfontein reservoir to provide additional capacity.

"Vlakfontein reservoir needed to be at a minimum level of 40% in order to assist with supplying the Mooikloof and Grootfontein reservoirs. Yesterday, Vlakfontein reservoir was sitting at 26% and it was not yet able to supply our reservoirs.

"Last night, Rand Water throttled the outlet valve of Vlakfontein Reservoir so that it could recover overnight."

Fosi says the Vlakfontein reservoir has improved overnight and was sitting at 49% on Thursday morning.

"Rand Water has opened full supply from Vlakfontein reservoir, and we expect to see improved flows to the Carina, Mooikloof and Grootfontein reservoirs. Since opening supply from Vlakfontein reservoir, we have finally seen levels slowly rising at the Mooikloof and Grootfontein reservoirs.

"It is very slow at the moment, but the fact that water is now filling the reservoirs faster than it is going out will allow us to normalise the water supply to these areas, particularly the high-lying areas that have been the worst affected."
