Tshwane train drivers fear for their lives

The United National Transport Union (UNTU) has appealed to railway authorities to increase security at train stations across Tshwane, after two train drivers were attacked on Wednesday morning.

The drivers' cabins were also stoned by commuters at the Koedoespoort Station in Pretoria.

"I managed to phone the train control officer and informed him that we were going to die if I am not allowed to continue with the shattered windscreen. The glass and stones were raining down on us," says driver, Kgaripane Mogashoa.

In reaction, UNTU demands that the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) increases the protection for train drivers.

The attacks have been attributed to train delays.

According to UNTU's general secretary, Steve Harris, two students were being trained when the attack took place.

"Commuters were threatening to kill me and the student. It was terrible. I kept on wondering what was going to happen next," says the second driver, Francois Herselman.

Harris confirmed that the train drivers and students have been receiving counselling.
