Tshwane unveils fleet to tackle cable theft
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The City of Tshwane has unveiled a fleet of more than 100 vehicles to help in the battle against the scourge of cable theft.
Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimanga says this will tighten security at the city’s infrastructure and cables.
"Today, we have just invested in buying over 100 off-road vehicles that we are going to give, we have invested in night vision goggles and in other tracking equipment, in trying to curb the issue of cable theft," Msimanga told Breakfast with Martin Bester.
The City also announced last week that it would be hiring an additional 1000 security guards to protect cables.
Reconstruction of the Wapadrand substation was delayed several times due to stolen cables.
This resulted in Pretoria East residents being without power for almost a week.
