Tshwane warns residents to save water or face severe restrictions
Updated | By Martine van der Walt Ehlers
The City of Tshwane warned on Sunday that it is continuing to experience a week-on-week high consumption of water by residents and businesses.

City spokesperson Selby Bokaba said this is despite the city’s numerous requests to customers to use water sparingly.
"This behaviour is putting the city’s bulk water system under severe strain and may lead to the municipality’s system running dry and eventually collapsing," warned Bokaba.
"The Rand Water system, which accounts for 79% of Tshwane’s water provision, is currently under severe pressure due to the city’s excessive demand.
"The Water utility is pumping about 800 million litres per day to Tshwane, which is 18% more than the city’s licence agreement with the entity.
"It is against this background that customers are cautioned that if the current consumption practice does not change, the city will imminently adjust the water restrictions to level 2 or even higher, which will have financial implications to consumers due to associated change in water tariffs.
Bokaba has also reminded residents and businesses of specific Level 1 water restrictions.
"No watering or irrigation of gardens with a hosepipe or sprinkler system between 06:00 and 18:00, no using of a hosepipe to clean driveways or patios, no washing of vehicles with a hosepipe and no filling or top up of swimming pools or water features," Bokaba explained.
"Punitive measures will be imposed against transgressors."
