The institution closed its doors following a number of protests by students, demanding a meal allowance from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas), particularly for students living off-campus.

The university's spokesperson Willa Du Ruyter says a resolution was reached following a protest Monday morning outside the Arebeng residence in the Pretoria CBD, which prevented students from entering the Arcadia campus.

"[There was] an issue around the accreditation of the Arebang residence, that issue was resolved. The campus rector and the director of Student Financial Aid assisting in resolving the issue. Currently, we are busy uploading the student's information on to the system to enable the meal allowances to be paid out."

Du Ruyter says the university has put extra security measures in place.

"The university has a contingency plan for security. We monitor every situation and should the need arise we will deploy the security where the need is, but like I said there was an engagement between the campus rector and the protestors and the leaders of the protest action, the situation was resolved so it is quiet there now."

University management and student representatives are in talks to recover the lost academic time.

"Activities at all other campuses resumed normally, there was quite a steady stream of students attending classes."
