Students at the Tshwane University of Technology handed over a memorandum of demands to university management on Wednesday.

This follows protest action at the university’s Soshanguve campuses.

Students want management to outsource funds to cover tuition for senior students who were not allowed to register this year due to a shortage of NSFAS funding as well as their failure to pay outstanding fees.

Sasco Gauteng deputy chairperson Sthembiso Ndlovu says 70% of these students are not financially able to cover their tuition.

“These are students who applied for NSFAS and cannot afford to pay their own fees,” he said.

Ndlovu says the campus buildings are also in poor conditions and residences have water leakages.

TUT spokesperson Willa de Ruyter says management met with students on Wednesday to discuss their demands.

Calm has since been restored at the university following protest action on campus.

“I can confirm that a management task team is meeting with students, but I cannot comment on the issues being discussed,” she says.

Ndlovu said they will give management time to go through their memorandum before taking further action.
