The Nobel Peace Prize laureate celebrates his 90th birthday on Thursday.

Ramaphosa says Tutu has always been a fighter for human rights, equality and social justice.

“You continue to remind us that fellowship, solidarity, charity and compassion for the vulnerable are values common to us all, and we should strive to live by them each day.

“We are further reminded that taking up the struggle for equality and social justice is not the responsibility of only government, civil society organisations or the clergy, but of us all,” wrote Ramaphosa.

He says Tutu has continued to provide moral and ethical guidance to the nation since its liberation.

“At times when we have found ourselves losing our way, you have taken us well to task. For nearly three decades, yours has been a voice of conscience, guiding us and motivating us to do better by our people.”

Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO Sello Hatang says Tutu remains the voice of reason.

“You remain that voice, that presence that we always wish we can have. And every day we want to be like you, we want to be as human as you are, are humane as you have always been you represent the best of our society and for that, we are grateful that you are still with us.”

Chairperson for the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation Niclas Kjellström-Matseke says it is important to celebrate him.

“It is for himself, for us to show our gratitude and our inspiration for his leadership and the great things that he has done for all of us, wherever you are in the world, we have been inspired and we need it.And the second reason is to show the importance of his voice.”
