Unification Task Team (UTT), which represents black-owned funeral parlours, picketed at the Department of Home Affairs in Tshwane on Tuesday.

It is unhappy with the department's certificate of competence, which is submitted before transporting a body from a mortuary, hospital, or forensic laboratory.

Tshwane Metro police spokesperson Isaac Mahamba says a firearm was confiscated during the protest.

"We can confirm that currently, the situation is calm, two people were arrested where one was arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and the other for public violence.

"The situation is calm, police and TMPD remain on-site to monitor the situation, but we are still engaging with Home Affairs and the aggrieved people just to establish the reason for the protest."

UTT spokesperson Muzi Hlengwa has slammed the police for opening fire at the protestors.

"White people burnt a police van, white people have guns, and nobody shot at them.

"Because we are black and people must shoot at us, what must we do in the march, must we bring guns as well? Is that the statement that the police are asking?”
