The two suspects, aged 39 and 40, were arrested in Makhado on Monday.

They allegedly impersonated South African Revenue Service officials in 2018.

The two suspects told the victim that she did not submit the returns on time therefore owed SARS a lot of money.

“The suspects allegedly demanded R400 000 in order to assist her with the late submission of the returns and not impound her vehicle. The victim managed to transfer R250 000 into the bank account,” says Hawks spokesperson Matimba Maluleke.

“The victim was surprised when she received correspondence from SARS that her returns were still outstanding and reported the matter to the Hawks.

“The matter was under investigation in consultation with the NPA until the warrants of arrest were issued against them. Investigations revealed that the suspects are not working for the SARS.”

The suspects are expected to appear in the Vuwani Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
