Unknown assailants threw acid on two British women on the east African holiday island of Zanzibar, police said Thursday.
The women were attacked in the streets of the island's capital, Stone Town, on Wednesday evening.
"The incident has shocked everyone here because it is the first such attack directed at foreigners," Zanzibari regional police commander Khamis Mukadam told dpa.
Police said the women were not tourists, but live and work on the semi-autonomous island located some 25 kilometres off mainland Tanzania.
Police said they have been unable to establish any leads on the attackers or their motive.
