Two female students die after drinking cough syrup mixture in Gauteng

The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has confirmed that two female students have died on Monday after drinking a mixture of alcohol and cough syrup.

VUT spokesperson, Mike Khuboni, says the incident took place at a private residence outside the premises of the University.
"We were alerted very early in the morning (Monday) by some of the students and what we did was rushed to get findings on the matter and indeed we found two deceased students," says Khuboni.
He says the bodies of the two students were discovered 300 meters apart from each other.
"We spoke to the police who were doing the investigation and we found the second body 300 meters away from the first body.
Currently, the police in Vanderbijlpark are handling the investigations," adds Khuboni.

Khuboni says both the families of the deceased were alerted of the incident.
He adds that it is the first time the University experience this kind of an incident.
"It is the first time where two of our students died in this similar manner, that is why we are very much interested in the findings of the investigation.
Fortunately, when police arrived at the scene two students who were with the deceased the night before we're there, we are hoping they will help the police to relate what actually happened," concludes Khuboni.

One of the victims, from Sebokeng, died at a friend's room, soon after she showed signs of not feeling well. The second victim died at her student residence. Police spokesperson, Busisiwe Sango, has confirmed the incident, adding the two girls were first spotted drinking this mixture at a friend's place in Vanderbijlpark.
