Two Gauteng pupils take own lives on same day

Two Gauteng pupils took their own lives at two separate schools, the province’s Education MEC Matome Chiloane said on Tuesday.

Chiloane said during lunchtime on Monday, the body of a Grade 10 learner from Soshanguve Secure Centre was discovered hanging in the dormitory at a juvenile centre.
Chiloane says the boy was taken to the centre about two weeks ago and was awaiting trial.
The department did not elaborate on his alleged offence or divulge his name.
Chiloane says in the second incident, a Grade 9 pupil from Kgetsi Ya Tsie Secondary School took his own life at home on Monday.
“These incidents serve as a grim reminder that the emotional well-being of learners is a shared responsibility that requires immediate attention from all of us,” said Chiloane.
“As we mourn the loss of young lives, there is a growing determination to prevent future tragedies and to foster a culture of support, compassion, and understanding within the educational community."
