Two govt officials nabbed for kidnapping Pretoria woman

Gauteng police arrested two government officials in Pretoria on Tuesday on charges of extortion and kidnapping.

The suspects, who work at the Department of Home Affairs and the Gauteng Traffic Department, allegedly extorted a businesswoman from Laudium in February this year.
The victim was accused of being undocumented by a group of eight suspects claiming to be police officers.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo said additional charges include damage to property and the theft of money.
"It is alleged that the suspects went to the house of the victim, who is a foreign national, and demanded to see the documents that qualify her to be in the country.
"After producing the documents, the suspects informed the victim that they were taking her to the Department of Home Affairs for verification of the documents."
However, the woman was instead taken to Pretoria Central Police Station and detained as an illegal immigrant.
The next day, the suspects took the victim to the airport, where they purchased a flight ticket and instructed her to leave the country as she was being deported.
"While at the airport, she reported the matter to the Immigration Officers and a case was opened," Masondo said.
